Email Hygiene/Two Peoples

Thursday: Fuzzy alarm clock didn't function this morning, not that I'm complaining. No house painters arrived. MB working at home. Shower, cats, down basement. Victor called and asked me to put together a web-page for the gig next week, and I said sure no problem. Decided I'd rather play drums than have lunch with the programmers.

Quite nice out today. Stopped at the dry cleaners at the top of the hill, and picked up fancy-India-print-shirts and a gold-black-shawl. In at work, B told me a man in motion has continued his motion. More email saying I don't in fact need to make a web page for the gig. And, for the record, don't give out my email address, or include me in any bulk mailings. Thank you. Spent a long time puzzling over why my UTF-16 files were getting hozed by P4. I don't squash bugs, I just show them the door. Walked out for banking and a burrito. Also picked up some signs for the tag sale. Worked until 7:15.

Over to Union Square. Two students tonight. I felt like I was rushing the entire class. I'm realizing I can easily extend sections just by going slower. Interesting contrasting energies from the two students.

Back home, and some food, hanging with MB. Watched some stuff on utube. Now, guitar, and completing the day.

Learning Final Cut/Boiler in Arlington/Stuff to the garage

Wednesday: Woke around 10, with a paw in the ear. I have black furry alarm clock. Email. Cats. Shower. Down basement. Spent some time learning how to use Final Cut Pro. Drums. Sitting and such. Took a spot of paint off the armoire. Quite nice weather out today.

In to work, and another happy day in bug land. Coffee. The obstinate developer remains obstinate. Or more so. Tracked down some PPC only issues. These will be getting harder to deal with. Lunch at my desk, thanks to MB. Met Shawn outside at 7:30.

To Arlington, where some young guys were in the process of dismantling the old boiler in the rehearsal space, presumably as a first step to installing a new one. A good rehearsal, though I wish I had warmed up a bit first. Tried out a new piece I've been working on. Some parts aren't working for me. Took a walk as a break midway, talking about doing things out of joy, as in "enjoy."

Gave Shawn a ride home. Back at the ranch, some food with MB. Loading stuff for the tag-sale into the garage. Made a sign for the sale. MB showed me a bit of a BD vid, where the instructor gave a peculiar glute exercise. Doing some prep for class tomorrow.

Not a day to paint the house

Tuesday: Woke around 9, Alphonso at the door. Bad day for painting. Slept, sort of, a bit more. Shower. Gave Gus his treatments. Down basement. Drums and so on. Fed the cats. Hung a mirror in the basement, and used the "eraser" thing that MB got to clean some scuffs off the walls.

In to work. Coffee. A good day of bug fixing. Realized, no yoga tonight. Bought a three-pack of old Atari games for my cell-phone. Wondered who gets the money. Stomach feeling a bit off. Had the nice lunch MB packed for me at my desk. Talked with Jm about how to make complex software more accessible. Worked until about 9:30. Decided to drive across town rather than take the highway.

Back home, and down basement. MB returned a bit later. Up and hello. Ate a little buttered roll, reading about Kurt Vonnegut in Rolling Stone. Some guitar. Now, some more guitar.

F&M Take a Shower

Monday: Despite Gus attempting to rip my ear off of my head, I did manage to sleep late. Cats, web, shower. Down basement. Lots of fun playing drums today. With the bit of work I've put in thus far, I'm to the point where I can play simple beats (though wobbly). Sitting. Had a quick breakfast. Email involving the NST Intro/Fretboard Knowledge weekend. Tacked a tapestry back up on the wall in the music room. Off. Overcast and almost chilly today.

Stopped at KKC, and quickly filled water bowls. Someone had made a large light offering in the teaching room, and the warmth from the candles made it quite toasty for me. Lots of new informative signs had been hung about the place, no doubt for the recent, well attended, evening with the Tibetan flutist.

In at work, talked to B about a conversation he had with someone at Apple concerning the problem with have with the obstinate add-on developer. Progress. I gave him a status report (somewhat sheepishly, since my project took longer than anticipated). Coffee. Wrapped up my internationalization work. Tofu Burrito, hot sauce, chips, soda. Fixed a bug with the "render to disc" feature.

Back home, Mta was sitting on the couch with a towel on her head. F&M don't have a bathroom at this point, so they came over to user the shower. I showed them the trailer for Anus McGillicutty. Laughter ensued. MB and I spent some time looking around the house for stuff we don't need and would like to get rid of. There's stuff we found that neither of us can remember how it came into our possession. I think it just sneaks in during the night, and takes up residence. Guitar.

A quiet day at home

Sunday: Slept until 1 PM. Much needed. MB was out at a BD workshop and contest. Breakfast, cats. Watched rest of a "scary" DVD. Shower. Down basement. Drums and sitting. Researching Final Cut. Reorganizing and cleaning in the basement. Spent some time working on promotion stuff. No guitar circle tonight. Raining off and on. Took a drive out and dropped off DVDs. Drove around a little. Took photos of some electronic gear I'm selling on ebay. Was posting the items when MB returned home. Notes from her day. We ate leftover Indian food together. Then guitar. She came down and we worked on Third Relations, Askesis and Eye of the Needle. A new piece has been birthing itself. Only had the head before, but the torso and feet appeared tonight. Down basement at KKC updates.

Bill helps with an armoire/little flyers

Saturday: Spent most of the morning wondering if the furniture was about to be delivered. Cats. Shower. Down basement. Drums. Sitting. Of course, they showed up just as I had some eggs cooking. The guys were not being very professional, and rolling their eyes at getting the armoire down basement. I took pity on them, and had them put it in the living room, since I wasn't sure where it was going to go. After they left, I tried putting some stereo equipment in it, and realized it was woefully too small. So, after breakfast, I began attempting to get it down basement by myself. Next door neighbor Bill saw what I was up to, and lent a hand. He has lived here his whole life, so he knows the history of my house better than I do. Put the stereo back together again. Did some work putting together promotional materials. Watched a bit of my dumb movie. Took a drive out and did some flyer hanging. Couldn't find a bookstore in Andover. The Someday has gone out of business. As has Unicorn books. My key fob stopped working, and I had to take the batteries out and clean them off, before I could get back in my car. Someone had a bubble machine running from a third floor window in Inmann Square. In Central Square a very thin woman, who seemed a bit mentally unstable, said she needed a hug, so I gave her one. I made the mistake of patting her on the head, which changed her mood to anger. An apology. MB called saying her BD seminar was complete for the day. I headed back home, picking up Indian food in Union Square, and a DVD up the road. Back home, and dinner with MB, then video, while she sewed. Guitar. Now down basement.

Furniture

Friday: Woke around 9:30. Focused morning, email, cats, down basement. Gave the furniture lady a call and pushed my coming out off an hour. Some drums etc. Shower. Headed out.

Drove out to Lexington, and to a small storefront, selling furniture. An old hotel is being knocked down to make way for luxury condos, and they are blowing out all the old furnishings. I met a couple of interesting people, including a young Tai Chi instructor (whose mannerisms reminded me of my friend Andrew.) I bought some stuff to help make the basement a bit more homey. Headed off to work, a light rain falling.

Coffee and two small muffins. A good day of work on the internationalization front. Completed work on the add-ons, and then turned my attention to a core library, with a venerable system for reporting OS errors. MB called for some perspective on the traffic she was stuck in, heading to CT for a BD gig. The phrase "touchy feely" hovered. Motion on the November GC course, with several emails back and forth. Walked out and got a burrito. Worked until around 9 PM.

Drove to a video store. They didn't have the crappy horror movie I wanted to watch, so I went to a second store. They did. Back home, Angl from across the street borrowed jumper cables, as I unloaded the car. Started a copy from one hard drive to another. Watched some of my movie. Put away laundry. Down basement. MB returned home, and I went up to say hello. She did fairly well money-wise tonight. A big weekend of BD coming up for her. I worked on the description for the GC course. Now, some guitar, and back down basement.

one is infinitely more than zero

Thursday: Woke around 11, feeling well rested. Email. Cats. Shower. Down basement. Drums and stuff. Updated my payment info a few places, since my bank sent me a new debit card. Off to work. A lovely day out.

Coffee and a goat cheese sandwich. Got the "bare metal" UI stuff I'd been tinkering with yesterday up on its feet for real. More work in the details of text encoding (passing UTF8 through a Unix pipe, and needing to parse out delimiters without false positives etc). Idle time: some shopping for a armoire on craigslist. Headed out at 7:20.

One student came to my class this evening. Very good. The teaching was well matched with the need. Afterwards, a fast food veggie burger. MB called on my cell. Back home and hanging out. She spent 5.5 hours in a salon today. She told me a story about a woman who, dissatisfied with her life, ended it. Helped her make a CD. "Touchy Feely" comment. Noticed the wood floor damaged. Did some more fixing of MB's stool. Down basement and email related to the upcoming Roundhouse course.

Bare metal

Wednesday: The phone rang, back to sleep. Woke around 10. Email. Cats. Shower. Down basement, and some drums. Packed guitar into the car, and headed out. Remembered I needed to start a laundry, so back in and did that. The usual dry cleaner's was closed, so dropped a couple things off at the one on the top of the hill. Over in to work, quite a lovely day out. Coffee and a muffin. Most of the day was spent researching how to make UI widgets work "on the bare metal" of OS X. Got a little test application doing all the stuff I needed to do by the end of the day. Lunch at my desk. More coffee, finally achieving sufficient caffeination. Met Shawn at 7:30, and drove to Arlington. A good rehearsal. More work on Third Relation. A friend of Shawn's dropped in and listened. We worked on our "unplugged" set for a surround-sound video shoot that's coming up. Wound up with a New Orleans tinged Moving Force and some Thraking. Dropped Shawn back at this place, and headed home, passing by the Somerville castle. Hello to MB. took out garbage and recycling. Made a sticker saying "Yard waste only" for one of the bins. Emailing and such.

Mom heads out, Final (hair)Cut.

Tuesday: Woke around 10. Mom was getting up as well. Shower, cats. I fixed some eggs for me and mom for breakfast. Leftover coffee. We took the dog for a walk around Somerville, up and over the pedestrian bridge over McGrath and around the neighborhood. Helped her be on her way, and goodbyes. Down basement and spent some time rearranging stuff in the music room. Video spooling. Drumming. Practices. Headed off to work. Stopped at the vet's in Porter Square, and picked up saline for Gus. Headed to work. But first a haircut. The lady-barber was pleasant (a youngish Asian woman). I did my best to make small-talk, although it's not my nature. Her hands smelled nice, like strawberry candy, and I told her it was a welcome change from the other guys in the shop, who often have hands that smell like salami or cigarettes. Then, finally in to work. More add-on localization today. Almost getting into a groove with it, but still hitting some stuff that I haven't hit before. Gave Kyo a couple add-ons, to see if she could successfully translate them. Tried installing Final Cut, but didn't have the right serial number. Jm, helped quite a bit in this effort. Walked out and got a burrito. Worked until 10:30. Noticed my tires looked really quite flat. On the way home, went to the gas station, and added more air. I had noticed my gas milage was down. This should help. Back home, hello to MB. Hanging out a bit. Guitar. Reading Final Cut documentation, and found a serial number. Email.

Video spool, and mom stops in

Monday: Woke around 9. Gus made sure I didn't go back to sleep. Feeling quite lazy. Email. Cats. Shower. Downstairs and more emailing. Down basement, drumming, practices. Spent some time rearranging stuff in the music room to free up desk space, and shift the drums to the side. Started video spooling into the computer. Headed to work. Coffee. Mellow day in the office. B was out today. More internationalization work. Lunch at my desk. Coffee. Mom called as she was hitting the road. Home just after 9. Mom had arrived just before me. We walked around the block talking. She told me about her trip up through Maine and New Hampshire. Lamas, Max the chicken chaser, and a straw bale house. Hanging out in the kitchen. MB arrived home. Guitar. Mom took a shower and went to bed. Down basement. More video spooling.

Wrap, and Back to MA

Sunday: Up and checked out. Breakfast at Panera's again. Worked through until 2, then had lunch. Gave N a ride to the airport. Back to A&R's, and worked at pulling music together, and packing things. Didn't have time to record two final audio only segments. Time started to seem very short. Packed and on the road. Gas. Returned rental car. Small plane back to Boston. Got back home around midnight. Hello to MB. Catching up on email.

Saturday, August 19, 2006

Video Shoot

Sat: Breakfast at a Panera's on the way to R&A's. Some audio problems led me to purchase a cheap mic preamp from Radio Shack. A full day of shooting video. Very good teamwork. Lunch with them. Indian food for dinner.

Friday, August 18, 2006

To Ohio

Friday: Up around 9. Mom was up around that time also. Some breakfast with her. Cats. Down basement, as she walked the dog. Some drums. Packing. Last minute stuff. Headed out to work late. Only put in about an hour today. Then off to Logan. Stuck in traffic a bit, but arrived in good time. Uneventful flight. Rental car. Found my way to the hotel. Dropped in on A&R. Got things set up for the shoot.

Little voice

Thursday: Woke around 10. MB was out doing things (Third Life etc). Web, cats, shower. MB returned. Down basement, and some additional stuff, and drums.

In to work. Missed the guys, and went walking around looking for them. No luck. Picked up some printing supplies at Staples. Was going to eat some pizza, but a tiny voice said I should eat something else. Got a burrito. Back at the office, more work on internationalization. Menus are working. Strings are not. Mom gave me a call from the road. Headed home around 6:30. An old friend Lz was in the parking garage with Ls. Good to see her.

On the drive back home, I saw a bumper sticker "I'm Knot into Yoga." This seems to be a sentiment shared by many, as I had similar results this week. Fire the director of advertising. Mom was walking down the street with dog Max. We got her stuff settled in the house, and I showed her the new guitar. We took a walk around the block. Some family types in a big black car slowed, and the guy in the passenger's seat asked her how old her Bichon is. Headed to Third Life, set up did a sitting, packed up. Drove a long route around Somerville, and dropped off DVDs. Back home, and hello to mom. Ate a leftover soy-sausage sandwich and some chips. MB returned home. We looked at some art my mom had been working on for MB. Also photos of MB's parent's trip to Hawaii. Mom told us her itinerary, which includes a long drive up through Maine, and then to New Hampshire on Monday (she'll swing back through Somerville Monday night.) Mom went to bed. Email. Hanging out with MB. Now, a little more guitar, then down basement.

Good Time

Wednesday: Woke around 9, but lazed until 10. Gus seemed intent on ripping my ear off of my head. The phone rang. Cats, shower, and so on. Had a cup of leftover coffee, and some cereal, and watched the rest of a comedy DVD that I need to return. Down basement and some drums. Packed up the car and headed out.

At work, got my add-on internationalization translation code up and running, and then got the loading working also. Took a walk out, made a deposit, bought an adapter at Radio Shack, picked up a couple CDs (asking about the cashier's "flare") and got some pizza and an energy drink. In conversation with B, decided what to do about backwards compatibility. He told me some more stuff about WWDC. I can't fathom Apple's obsession with Objective C. Come on guys. Get real. Coffee and phone call. Met Shawn at 7:30, and drove to Arlington.

CoFD rehearsal. Quite good. Progress on Moving Force and Third Relation, and tightening up of the rest of our repertoire. I found parallels tonight between practicing existing material, and debugging, and working on new material, and writing new code. Very different activities, yet both necessary. To much rehearsing of existing material drains the joy from the work. Realized that I was getting so much bass feedback, because the graphic EQ on the PA had the bass frequencies cranked. Gave Shawn a ride to Arlington. Long way home, with a crazy driver meandering between lanes.

Back home, and hanging out with MB. Made a soy sausage sandwich. Speed read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." Email and such. Now down basement.

Wednesday, August 16, 2006

Alfonso

Tuesday: Up around 10. Web, cats, shower. Sitting in the dance room. Downstairs and feeding the cats, when a prospective handy-man arrived. A good fellow it seemed to me, so I think I'll hire him. A nice breakfast (eggs and such). Guitar. Tidied up a corner that had been accumulating clutter. Down basement for a bit (drums and so on). Headed to work.

The unreasonable developer continues to be unreasonable. His email to me today stopped having any technical content, and consisted of pure flame bait, so I didn't respond. Continued working on my internationalization project, making a little utility to convert from old resource based dialogs to new XML based dialogs. Lunch at my desk (a leftover veggie burger from the luau) and later, a coffee.

Good yoga session tonight, and though not as strenuous as others, it was quite sweaty, given the humidity. Had a chat with Wendy after class, about her conversation (putting gossip to rest) with Wnd. Bought some used books. Headed home. Tried to buy some printer paper, but Staples was closed. Filled up the tank.

There were 4 unsavory youts hanging around outside our house. They're the sort of kids that look board and unhappy enough, that they might actually cause trouble. They meandered down the street when I pulled into the driveway. I made burritos, then ate, listening to NPR. MB returned home, and I hung with her as she ate. Coffee and ice cream. Guitar. Email, and list cleaning. Now down basement.

What day is it?

Monday: Odd sleeping, woke as MB left, then back to sleep, but feeling confused about what day it was. Gus was trying to dig a tunnel through the back of my neck. The phone rang so I answered it. Shower, cats, email. Down basement (drums). I got another parking ticket today, oh joy. Handled some travel details. Guitar.

Drove out, dropping a check for the parking ticket in the mail. The sooner you handle something like that, the sooner it disappears from memory. Over to KKC. The monk from Mexico was on the couch watching a video. I emptied the water bowls and swept up a bit. Things took longer than usual today.

In at the office, the developer that seemed like he was being reasonable at the end of last week suddenly flipped back into unreasonable mode. I have very little left to say to him without beginning to repeat myself. I let him know that we had tried the solution he referenced and it didn't work for us. Talked to B. Continued my work (mostly research) on the internationalization scheme for add-ons. Wrote a little code. Walked out and did some shopping at the CVS. Talked to a guy with a placard who was telling people about the (supposed) inconsistencies in the current explanation about what happened on 9/11. My mom called. Shamefully, I'd forgotten her birthday. Headed home around 9pm.

Back at the ranch, decided to say "meow" rather than speaking for about 5 minutes. Called my mom and made amends. Had some snacks with MB in the kitchen. Guitar.

Charlestown Heights

Sunday: Slept in. Much needed. MB was gone and came back, and was gone again (she was leading a zill workshop this afternoon). Up, email, shower, cats, down basement (drums). Wnd had left me a message on my cell. I called her back, and we decided to get sandwiches. She dropped by, and then as we were driving away I suggested we just get them at the local pizza shop. So parked, and ordered food. Walked over to Foss Park. We ate sitting on some unused baseball bleachers, and chatting.

After I said goodbye to Wnd, I played guitar for a while, and then went out for a bike ride. Lovely day out. Almost autumnal. Explored a neighborhood that MB and I had spotted before, but had not had time to check-out. It's called Charlestown Heights. Biked up a curving walk to a park, and then around the summit, and side-streets. Eventually headed home.

MB had just gotten in when I arrived. We ate some cheese and crackers. I wound up taking a nap of sorts. Later, we decided to eat dinner at home. MB made Peach Cobbler, and I made some burritos. Yum. Clean up, while MB read to me of the Flaming Lips. Then dessert. I paid bills, then took a walk out to drop envelopes in the mail. Down basement for a bit. More guitar. Email. Now, back down basement.

Luau

Saturday: Slept in a little. MB gave me a nudge around 11. Then the electrician arrived. Jumped out of bed a little abruptly. A sense of being a little out of step followed me through the morning. Walked the electrician around, and got an estimate for some work. Bowl of cereal. Shower. Down basement (some drums). Packed up the car and headed out. Immediately drove back home to fetch MB's sweater.

A pleasant drive down to a BD paraphernalia store in RI. However, at one point, a pick-up truck cut across 4 lanes of traffic, forcing another car to swerve to avoid being hit, and then swerve again to avoid going off the exit. Dropped MB at the shop, then drove around a little, eventually sitting and watching planes take off at the nearby airport. Picked MB up, then off to Martin's.

A lovely day for the luau, clear, sunny but not too hot. Hellos. Put my guitar upstairs. Made veggie burgers. MB and I sat eating on the steps of the neighbor's house. Up to the attic room for warming up the hands. MB joined me. Jn, whose wedding we played, was doing a solo looping stick thing. Fun. Victor arrived. Alex. David and family. After a guy who sang to sequences, we set up the stools and got wired. Circle up at the other side of the property. The young girls hand taken over the attic room, and had anointed my guitar case with watermelon soda.

We went on, and played a set. A bit rough from my point of view. The balance was not good. Thrak was loud and powerful. Noah kept yelling "Encore" and "Ready Set Go", but wouldn't on queue. David asked someone smoking a cigar, to put it out. I led off, and a closing circle. A couple of Crafties from NYC played after us, but they didn't leave us any time to strike our gear, so our choices were, disturb them, or wait until the end of their set. I chose the latter, and was happy. They were fun to listen to . Packing up, goodbyes, and so on.

More or less uneventful drive back to Boston, tucking MB in. Now down basement.

service professionals

Friday: Woke around 9. Cats, email, shower. Down basement. Some drumming. Folded laundry. Had a phone conversation with Rcd, working out details of our video project next week. Had some breakfast (eggs, soy sausage, coffee, juice, toast). Did some work getting back to the service people that had contacted me about my house projects. Did some graphic design. Guitar. Headed out.

Stopped for an energy drink on the road, then in to the office. Did some reworking of UI code related to add-ons, paving the way for internationalization. The issue with the obstinate developer resolved itself. I spent quite some time crafting a response to him. Some coffee in the late afternoon.

Back home at 8, just as MB was arriving. Helped unload groceries. I walked to the store to pick up a couple other items while she worked on dinner. My patience was tested when the woman in front of me in line couldn't figure out how to PIN-pad, while buying something for $3, and asking for $20 back in an odd combination of denominations. Back home, and a nice evening with MB, eating dinner and watching some DVDs.

Thursday, August 10, 2006

video camera

Thursday: Got about two hours sleep last night. Woke at 8, to disturbing news from London. MB was out at Third Life practicing dancing. Up, and cats, shower, brief email, down basement. Said hello to MB. Printed directions to Lyman's, and then out with MB and a bundle of papers. Hard finding our way into the building. Finally presented ourselves to the receptionist, and then spent about an hour and half going through all our documents. A pleasant drive home.

Down basement for about a two hour nap, then off to work. Grabbed some pizza before sitting down at the desk. Worked on a new method for creating add-on user interface layouts. Refreshing to be doing something constructive, rather than just fixing bugs. Coffee. Jm was out today, so I wasn't able to talk to him about the issue with the obstinate developer. This issue has been pushing a button, and I've been letting go. Talked to Eln about string parsing and character encoding. Left a bit after 7.

Home briefly, picking up some flyers, and testing the video camera, which arrived on my desk today. The cats obliged by doing stupid stuff. It works. To Union Square, and Third Life. Said hello to the guy that runs the class before me. No participants again. Packed up and headed out. Stopped at the video store and picked up a couple titles. Got a fast food veggie burger as consolation. Back home watched a little of "V is for Vendetta" while eating. Found I'd rather be playing with the camera, which I did. MB came home and we watched more of the movie. I made a connecter for the shotgun mic to the unbalanced stereo input of the camera. Did some more experimentation with iMovie and iDVD. Fun stuff.

perception vs reality

Wednesday: Woke at 8 AM. MB was heading out. Brief everything, shower, cats, basement. Headed to the dentist's office. A lovely day.

Arrived about 5 minutes late, but had to sit waiting for quite a long time anyway. A cleaning, some x-rays. All looks good. Oh, and a painless extraction from my wallet.

Back to the car, back home. Took a lovely nap. Email. A bowl of cereal. Headed off to work.

But first, walked over to the print shop, and picked up a job I'd emailed in a few days back. Iced coffee and a muffin. Fixed a couple bugs, and settled into Apple Mail a bit more. Jm asked me to answer some technical questions about a particular developer that is being belligerent with us. My position is, we must explain to him the reality of the situation. Jm wants to "spin" things. This is where the worlds of marketing and engineering collide. Marketing is about "perception." Engineering is about "reality." Funny how perception and reality can have so little to do with each other. Found Shawn sitting on a bench. Got a cup of coffee, and took him back up to the office briefly. Then, off to Arlington.

A good rehearsal session. Third Relation sounds quite good with drums, it turns out. Ran through the rest of our material. The new guitar sounds great. The only problem is, it's so resonant that feedback arises easily. Some diversions into conversation. Gave Shawn a ride home, talking some politics, and how music can act as a subtle catalyst for change.

Back home, and some hanging out with MB. A sad answering machine message regarding Gf. Pulling some financial information together. Now, down basement.

Wednesday, August 09, 2006

Bye Bye Eudora

Tuesday: Woke and hung around in bed for a bit with the cats. Email. Making some inquiries about house projects that need attending to. Shower. Fed the beasts. Down basement. Drums. Fixed a section of the stockade fence in the backyard, where a nail and split the wood. Galvanized self tapping wood screws to the rescue. Said hello to neighbor Bl. Some guitar.

Headed off to work, driving across town. Didn't get much done today at all, except for switching from Eudora to Apple's Mail. Eudora is great, but they are taking too long coming out with a Universal version. And this, after the Mac version has lagged the Windows version for way too long. I have most of my email all the way back to 1996.

Headed to yoga. Nice weather, so the doors and windows were open. Some interesting balancing postures that Wendy hadn't given before. Sleepy during meditation. After class, Wendy and I went for sandwiches at the local ice cream shop, talking about body energetics.

Back home, and hello to MB. Hanging out and making lunches. Making some advertising for a local free magazine. Email.

Monday, August 07, 2006

Care Package

Monday: Went to sleep around dawn and slept until noon. I'm a vampire, I guess. MB (working at home today) woke me telling me about an email exchange she'd had that was unsettling. Up, cats, shower. Put together a care package for my friend Grf, who is ailing. Down basement, practices, and a little drumming. Addressed a box of video gear I'm returning. Headed out.

Stopped at the PO and mailed the gear and the care package. My car was not towed in the process. Then to KKC. Didn't see a soul as I filled water bowls. But people were around. On the warm side today. Headed to work.

Just before I reached the office, stopped for pizza and an energy drink, which I took with me, and ate at my desk. Fixed a couple of bugs. Email. Watched the Steve Jobs keynote at WWDC out of one eye as I worked. Coffee and a raspberry treat. Stayed until about 9:30.

Back home, and phone messages, one from some people we met on Saturday. Down basement, getting a jump on evening practices. MB returned home. Some hanging out. Made a couple of burrito like things which I ate while listening to the BBC. Email. Now, guitar, and down basement.

Sunday, August 06, 2006

Circle in the Dining Room

Sunday: A lazy morning, yogurt and cold coffee. Guitar. MB came home, and I played for her while she ate. She read me a great essay about a metallic woodpecker noise. Down basement, as MB installed a trellis along the driveway. Pulled some financial documents together. It turned out that the circle was meeting at our house rather than the dojo. I spent some time in the backyard with Leo. Then, the first circle meeting with my new guitar. It was an interesting coincidence that the first meeting with this guitar was held in the same room where Victor first suggested I look for a new instrument, almost 2 years ago. Gus wanted to join the circle. Snacks.

Saturday, August 05, 2006

Hungry Ghost/Success

Saturday: A late morning, and breakfast/lunch with MB on the back patio. Talked to my friend Mrg. Bad news about my friend Grf's health. Made a big salad with MB, which we ate in a bit of a rush before heading out to see the new Will Ferrell movie. A evening of socializing.

Raising of the Wrist

Friday: Slept in a bit, web, cats, shower, down basement. Played some drums. If I play 10 minutes a day, maybe I'll make some progress. A bit of breakfast, M in the yard tending to the plants. Guitar. Email. Handled the video camera issue. Cleaned the screen of my laptop.

In at work, completed the bug fix I was in the middle of yesterday, when the power went off. My mom called and we chatted. Started working on another bug. Some of us went out to a nearby bar to celebrate the recent release. Seltzer for me. Completed work on the bug. Said goodbye to B, who is off on a trip to WWDC.

Back home, walked out and got some pizza and salad. Ate while watching a DVD. MB called from her BD gig saying she'd be home late. Soon down basement.

Blackout

Thursday: MB headed out to do some dancing at Third Life. Slept in after a latish night, and catching up. Woke and quick shower, down basement, then headed out. Got stuck in traffic right in front of the office, and called out to Al, B, Mk and Dnl who were on their way to Grafton. Bloody hot out. After parking, had lunch with them. Expensive.

Enough with the organizing, began to actually fix a bug today. Then the power went out. We were all standing about. Mth told us how he got his poison ivy, and about his cat dying. They were on the Cape and didn't have a shovel, so they put the dead kitty in the freezer. Decided that since I was planning on leaving early, that I would just leave rather than stand around waiting for the office to heat up.

The elevators didn't work, and the card key system also requires electricty. I was able to get into the parking garage through a door which apparently opens when the power fails. The actual garage door though requires electricity to open and close. I climbed up and pulled the manual release. MB's cousin Adm and an older colleague came by on their way out. They said they were still doing company business, so I asked for a $100 garage door opening fee. It had cooled off considerably by this point.

Back home. Dug some rot and debris out along the edge where the deck meets the house, and put down some flashing to try to avoid more damage. Guitar. A bit of email. Headed to Third Life and set up for my class. No students again, which makes it difficult to give a class. Stopped for a veggie burger. Back home again, and watched a bit of a DVD. MB returned from her BD teaching gig. Hanging out while she made lunches. More guitar. Enjoyed exploring the resonance of the instrument, playing percussion on it with little rubber mallets. Also, adjusted the truss-rod a little, as I was hearing some vibration from it. A snack with MB. Email and such. More mini-DV research.

A George Carlin quote:
New Rule for Starbucks customers: The more complicated the Starbucks order, the bigger the ass-hole. If you walk into a Starbucks and order "a decaf grande, half-soy, half-low fat, iced vanilla, double-shot, gingerbread cappuccino, extra dry, light ice, with one Sweet-n'-Low and one NutraSweet"--ooh, you're a huge ass-hole.

Hotter

Wednesday: Slept until about 10. Cats, web, shower. Had some breakfast, then down basement. Drums, morning practices. Fixed a guitar cable. Looked at another one, a venerable old heavy duty cable, that seemed shorted out, only to notice that it had a "feature" that shorted it out when not fully plugged in. Disabled that, and it worked fine. Found someone teaching something called "YogaGuitar" in Davis, based on the work of Gurdjieff.

Headed off to work. Burned my hand a little on my car. That hot. Cranked the AC and drove across town. More bug triage today. Didn't actually do anything. Some video equipment arrived for me, but it turns out the camera does not have a microphone input, which renders it useless to me. Hopefully I can return it. Talked to B about strategies for prioritizing bugs and feature requests. We shipped today. Took a walk out and picked up a CD player that I was having repaired. Bought a couple of DVDs. Ate pizza. Shawn called to tell me we would not be rehearsing tonight. Headed home around 8:30.

Back home, talked to MB for a bit. Played guitar for a good long time. Been having some interesting dialog with the luthier about how the tone will change over time. Adjusted the action. On this guitar, its as simple as giving a small twist to a recessed bolt using an Allen Wrench. Very good.

Hot

Tuesday: Late night, last. Didn't really have the time to watch that DVD. So, up and checking email. Shower. Cats. Down basement. Played drums for 5 minutes. Pathetic. Morning stuff. A wee bit of guitar. Some emailing. Suffered through more time on hold long enough to cancel my order with one company, and make some changes to the (incorrectly reported) order from the other company. Tidying.

Drove out, wearing a very loud Hawaiian shirt, the day heating up. Stopped at the video store and dropped off DVDs. Headed to H Sq. Iced coffee and a muffin. Yesterday I had emailed an add-on developer about a bug of theirs that I had diagnosed. He wrote back today "There was no bug, but I fixed it anyway." Spent most of my time at work today sorting through bugs. Having spent the last few months fixing bugs, we are now going to fix more bugs, so some sense of priority is needed. Lunch at my desk, coffee late in the day. Spent some time talking to Al and Eln. Built a dev kit and gave it to Ls. Updated the dev kit building code to copy the icons along with the examples. Headed to yoga around 6:35.

Feeling quite sleepy, but a good class. Many new people. I think there were 11 students, so quite a good turn-out. The AC was cranked in the gompa, providing some relief from the intense heat outside. Perhaps a little too much even, as it felt drafty to me. Back home around 9:15, and my conference call. Lots of juice from Stph having returned from his trip around Europe, and his new certification status. Then a conversation with Nc about our video project. Upstairs and hanging with MB. We played some guitar together, and then I ate a microwaved burrito while she told me about some work related stuff. Tucked her in. Email. Soon, completing the day.

Sad news tonight that Rbt from KKC is having some health problems. His wife gave birth just a couple of months ago, and they were married only a year or so before that.
