Thursday: Up around 8:30. Time squandering on the web. David shared an interesting GC related dream. Sitting. Shower. Changed my guitar strings. Coffee and cereal. Played guitar for a bit. Down basement for morning practices. Seeing as I was already late, I made myself even later by responding to email. Some GC related events are unfolding with rapidity. Took pictures of "Catbox in a bowl."
In to work. Overcast day. Like clockwork, a couple of features that always break right before a release, turned up broken. Spent the rest of the day squashing bugs that should have been caught weeks, if not months, ago. Realized that if I was to get my changes in for the next beta, I wasn't going to be able to do any of the things I had planned for the evening. So, worked late.
Back home, MB was off in Lowell at a BD gig. (Tonight also had an interesting event at KKC, and the last performance by my good friend Shawn's band, Chauncy.) I took a shower, then ate leftover noodles, listening to NPR. Some more guitar. Email. MB returned home, a little after midnight. An "Amber Alert" has been raised locally, relating to the abduction of some kids. We are to be on the lookout for a green Ford minivan.

Catbox in a bowl
Wednesday: Up around 8. Web. Fed cats. Shower. Guitar. Down basement for morning practices. Packed a little breakfast to add to the lunch MB made for me. Headed out.
Overcast with sun breaking through. Some rain in the afternoon, but still muggy. A few bugs served as distractions today (one I fixed, the others were long-standing, and non-critical, so let them slide). Otherwise, working on the new code. Actually got some data flowing all the way through the new system (for about 2 seconds, then something asserted, and it fell over. More debugging tomorrow.) Backed up my laptop. Talked a bit with B. Alx was spreading FUD, but it's looking like they are going to branch the current release off the tip very soon. Headed out around 6:35.
Storrow was crawling, so I didn't get on it, but found a different route, using Memorial Drive into Charlestown. I arrived about 15 minutes late at KKC, but it turned out that Geshe Ngawang was also late (as was Wnd). A good teaching, Geshe Ngawang engaging us in some debate around material that was essentially set-theory. He had ridden in a car three hours each directly to be with us tonight. Brief class. Hung with Wnd and Ed in the library. A woman and her beau from Brazil were visiting the center. They were enthusiastically taking pictures of everything, and scooping up free books. Wnd and Ed made a new shelf in the library and reorganized some books. I sat with Wnd for a bit and chatted. Then back home.
Said hello to MB. We unloaded the dishwasher, cleaned the cat-box, and took out the recycling and garbage. I cooked an improvised noodle dish, which I ate some of listening to NPR. A little more guitar. Email. Soon bed.

No Jun
Tuesday: Up around 8, as MB headed out. Feeling groggy. Shower. Fed cats. A bit of guitar. Down basement for morning practices. Headed out, stopping at the supermarket. Bought a salad for lunch, and some stuff for breakfast, and a box of cookies. A store employee, being helpful, got me to use the self-checkout. I realized I only wanted one box of cookies, rather than two, but she wasn't able to void the transaction. I collected my stuff, and headed for a regular checkout lane.
In at work, feeling a bit sleepy, so had to keep forcing myself to get down to business, but got a fair amount done in the end. Hooked the middle part up to the top and the bottom. Tomorrow I should get data flowing. Food at my desk. A bug came in later in the day, but I didn't get around to looking at it. Headed out around 6:40.
KKC, and yoga (with Wendy on tape). Things began a little late, so I didn't miss anything. A good session as always, though I was sleepy in the end portion. Wnd Sn and I all helped empty water bowls. Drove with Wnd up to her parents house to drop off some potatoes. Sn says drinking potato juice helps with acid reflux.
Back home, no sign of MB. Email. She arrives later on. We chat. I eat some toast and cheese. A bit more guitar. I missed my session with Jun today. I had forgotten that we had switched it from Thursday. Drat.
Today, Bush said. "They wear no uniform. They respect no laws of warfare or morality. They are trying to shake our will in Iraq, just as they tried to shake our will on September 11, 2001. They will fail."
Does he really think that people will not see that the "they" that were responsible for 9/11 and the "they" that make up the insurgent forces in Iraq have nothing to do with each other? Granted, he has gone a long way by not overestimating the intelligence of the American populace, but lately (also thinking of Cheney's "Last Throes" comment) it's just getting so blatant that you think someone would notice. Oh, probably not.

This is not looser than clams
Monday: Up around 8. Brief sitting, shower. Put away laundry. Loaded TGB multi-media disk into the iMac. Had breakfast (tea, egg/bagel sandwich, strawberries). Down basement for morning practices.
Drove up to Highland. Stopped at got an energy drink, which I consumed quickly while walking toward the library. I dropped the can in the garbage, and a fairly well dressed older man immediately picked it out, and walked away with it. Picked up a couple of CDs, which I had on hold, at the front desk. Over to KKC. Emptied water bowls. Talked to Ngawang on the phone. Jolly. Tsunmala told me some sad news, and we talked for quite awhile. Hard to process. Cleaned up a bit, and filled the bowls, taking my time. Lovely day out. Headed to work.
A good day at the office. I fixed a couple of last minute bugs, and got back to work on my other project, getting the connection code up and running. So, the lowest level, and the highest level are complete. Now to fill in the middle. Someone was interviewing, who spent most of the time saying how terrible and idiotic his current employers are. Needless to say, we're not going to hire him. Continued my salvo on bracketing style with Dnl. MB had packed a lunch for me, but it wasn't quite enough. Walked out and got some pizza. Later, I also walked out with B, M, and C and got another caffeinated beverage. Talked about drum corps for some reason. While waiting for builds watched some of the serial killer's confession on the web. Absolutely chilling. Also did some searching on Tommy Boy's brain drain (the Cult of Xnu).
Back home, and hung with MB, making a quick dinner of frozen veggies and a soy based 'chicken' patty. Guitar for a bit.

Microfilm
Sunday: Up around 8:30. Shower. Downstairs, and made some breakfast. Tony came down, and, together with MB, we ate and had some pleasant conversation about music, Guitar Craft, and our past. At 10, I drove him to South Station, parking in the bus lot, and walking him over to the trains. A short visit, but very pleasant to have him with us.
Back home, stopping for an energy drink and potato chips. I was dawdling in the store, and I asked myself, "what am I doing here?" Back home, and said hello to MB, then down basement for morning practices. The internet wasn't working so I looked into that. Also did a little reading.
Back upstairs, and it was almost time for MB to head out to a dance audition. After she left, I did some work, attempting to wind some microfilm, off one spool, and onto a different sized spool. Some lazing about. MB returned as I was about to do laundry. Found that my turntable had blown a fuse when it hit the end of the reel. A bit of a disappointment. Ate some lunch, hanging with MB. Email. A little while later, it was time to go to guitar circle.
Arrived on time tonight. Alex L was in attendance. Circulation exercise (working with two notes, six note patterns, skipping the person that began, then a turn-around, and mirror). An exercise in 'pair share' 'completing a process' and 'what do you want.' Eye of the Needle, Moving Force (needed to work out the bass-line) Bicycling to Afghanistan.
Back home, snacks with MB (She ate a soy sausage melt, and I had leftover hot and sour soup). We've decided our ticket to fame and fortune will be a book of prune recipes. She is also concerned that we will become increasingly eccentric as we age. She's probably right.

Heartbreak Hotel
Saturday: MB went out early to the farmer's market in Union Square. I got up, web, shower. Was about to go down basement, when she returned. I ate some breakfast, and we hung out. Some phone calling with Terry arranging the logistics of getting down to Lupo's. Talked to Wnd briefly as well. MB headed out around 12:30, driving down to RI to see her friend V and new baby G. Brief sitting. Touch-up-painted the wall leading upstairs. (Always seems to get bumped.) Morning practices. Wnd stopped in for a brief visit. I got on the road by 3:30.
Made good time. Got to the Bonanza bus station, and then figured out that Tony must be coming in on the Greyhound. Drove to that station, and gave him a call on the cell, just to be sure. Realized I'd left my wallet at home. Some walking around, taking the lay of the land. Hot out today. Tony arrived about 5:10. We decided to try to just nose around and find Lupo's rather than following the directions. Good thing we did, since it turned out to be only a couple blocks from the bus station.
Dropped off Tony and found parking. When I entered, Terry was already there. His girlfriend lent him her car. Some reconnoitering. Check-in with RF. This club was a much different venue than the Somerville Theater. It's used as a nightclub as well as a performance space. They just bring in chairs for concerts, and change the stage around some. Stripper poles and dancing cages were available, but we did not wind up making use of them. Terry, Biff and I went to find food. We picked a Cuban place near where I'd parked the car. Terry and I had the veggie wrap (essentially a bean burrito). Yerba Maté Soda. Plantains. Back to the club. We stood in our spots as the doors opened, about 7:05. RF gave us a little bit of a challenge, by sitting out at the mixing-board. I hovered, trying to make sure no one would bother him. One guy tried to ask a question, but I turned him away. I was asked to let the house security guys know they didn't need to stand by the steps leading onto the stage. MB arrived.
The show began on time, and had a similar format to the previous night. I stood near the bar, and did my best to split my attention between the music, and keeping an eye on things. I felt more uneasy in this venue. Most of the audience was very well behaved, but I sensed disruptive element in the air. One guy sat way in the back of the club with his arms folded, giving off hostility. People were drinking and stumbling around. The best question of the night came from a nine year old: "Do you imagine things while you're playing?" The casualness of the club atmosphere helped move from the speaking portion back into the music. After the show, the three of us (Thirds Maintainers, I guess) stood around not knowing quite what to do. I had the thought that I wanted to make sure no one was sneaking up the stairs to the dressing room, so I went back stage. Tony and Terry followed, and we wound up going up and having our "Fisting for completion." An old acquaintance came in to say hello. We were given some tuna salad, cru-de-te, and mint tea to take home (I think Terry wound up with all of it). Back downstairs, we found that someone had stolen the DAT tapes of the evening's performance. What a bummer. I felt responsible for this, in that, I led Tony and Terry away from the floor, by going backstage.
We headed out, passing RF, who was sitting in a car waiting to leave. He thanked MB for letting me come out. We said goodbye to John and Biff. On the road, and good conversation with Tony.
Back home, we got Tony settled, then all sat around drinking some tea, and eating a little pie. And, when I say "a little pie," I mean a little pie. I think it was probably 6 inches in diameter. I stayed up trying to complete a few things. Cut it short when I found myself profoundly sleepy.

RF at the Somerville Theater
Friday: Woke around 9. Yep, late night. MB headed out. I jumped out of bed, down the stairs, and violently shampooed 5 couch pillows. Also tidied up around the house. Ate some breakfast (cereal, tea), shower. Left some notes for M. Down basement and morning practices. Said hello to M, as she cleaned. Drove out. Stopped at the Shaws to drop off the rug cleaner. Bought an energy drink. I have been reluctant to try this particular brand. The advertising rubs me the wrong way, and its by a large soda manufacturer. Sure enough, it is similar to what I would imagine a mixture of Lemony Pledge and Weasel Urine to taste like.
In to work. Poked around at my new project, but not huge progress. Sent off a couple of whiny emails about code formatting style. Xeroxed some materials from Jun. Jn gave me a bug near the end. Didn't get to fix it before leaving around 4:30.
Found parking in Davis Sq, and made my way to the Somerville Theater. Explained who I was sufficiently for them to let me in. Met David, Biff and Robert. Got my laminated tag. Sat for a spell. Met David K and Terry in the lobby. I went and bought us some shoe laces to use as lanyards. Soon Victor arrived. Some talk and hanging around. David K and I went and got some pizza, talking about programming languages. Back to the theater, more details. Figuring out where to stand. Listening to the Residents. We all had a quick meeting with Robert. He asked "So do you know what you're doing out there?" That's one of those unanswerables, isn't it? We took our places, and stood as the doors opened (7:15). We stood through the welcoming prerecorded music (You have Ring Worm), we stood through the first set, the Q&A, the prerecorded bit, and the second set. Good stuff. Sore feet.
In the usual triad, we have the Music, the Musician, and the Audience. I sensed that tonight the four of us were serving as a fourth (subsidiary) component... an extension of the Musician, helping to deliver the Music to the Audience. A mama cat holds down her squirmy young-ones, while she cleans their ears. Perhaps, we were the firm, but loving, paw.
After the show, another brief meeting with RF, as he prepared to, much deservedly, chow down on Indian food. Saw Bl B, and Shawn. Some standing around on the sidewalk. MB had to go back to David and J's house to pick up her car. I decided to go back to work. Drove back to H Sq and put in 45 minutes, fixing the bug I'd left hanging. Made the decision to check it in. Got an email from Tony making arrangements for tomorrow.
Back home. Spent some time with MB. We ate leftover Chinese food and talked. I practiced a little guitar. Updated the KKC website. Posted a sermon to the OCBC site. Email. Very soon bed.

Thursday is Music Day (2)
Thursday: Up around 8 as MB headed off to work. Yes, another late night, although not as late as it might have been. MB called back to say that the dry cleaners didn't think they should do the small pillows from one of the couches. Shower, fed cats, made a cup of tea. Called to ask if we could keep the 'steam' cleaner for another day. Realized I'd left something at work. Down basement with little time remaining. Did what I could, then packed the car, and headed out.
Stopped at the Somerville Library and picked up a score. Quite a nice day out. Arrived at Jun's probably 5 minutes late. Interesting session, looking at the Augmented 5th chord, and its application. Did a little improvising using a 12 tone fragment. Around 1:15, we ended. I walked out and got a couple slices of pizza, which I ate sitting in my car.
In to work. Didn't get much done today. Design mostly. Some consulting with Dv on resource problems. Walked out and bought some batteries, and a tofu wrap. Long talk with B. Headed out a little after 8. Realized I'd left my jacket in the closet. Parked, and ran and got it.
Arrived at Shawn's rehearsal space about 5 minutes late. Good work on the same composition as our last session, then running through the other pieces and tightening some parts up. Gave him a ride home.
Back at my place, replaced a battery in the alarm system. Worked on the KKC website. MB called to say she was just leaving Lowell. Down basement for transplanted morning practices.

Rug Doctor
Wednesday: Slept in after yet another late night. My old habits have come back in a slightly new form. Reluctantly left the bed. Shower. Down basement for morning practices. Drove out, stopping at the paint store, buying some tinted primer, and some interior wall paint. There's something hopeful and cheery about paint stores. A place devoted to making things fresh and clean. Dropped off a DVD. It rained a little in the morning, but was clear once I turned towards the office.
I was going to do more on my new project, but several small bugs in my in-box derailed those plans. They were all simple to fix. Walked out and got a couple of slices of pizza and an energy drink. Noticed that, the new guy behind the counter was still there, and that in fact, all the employees were different, and the pizza was different (thicker crust). I suspect a change in management. This would be the third owner since it was renamed "Tommy's Pizza" some 10 years ago. Finally got to work on my new stuff in the late afternoon. Reviewed the global design goals. Came up with a slightly clever data structure for the next large object I'm going to write. Alx managed to get under my skin, with some comments related to XCode. Headed home around 7:15.
Drove the the supermarket in Medford, and rented a rug cleaner. Back home, got things going. MB returned shortly. Realized we were missing anti-foaming agent. Ordered some Chinese food, and went out to pick it up, and the anti-foam. Back, MB ate a little while I got to shampooing the furniture. She vacuumed upstairs, and attended to a few other things, while I continued. Then the rugs. Once it was all done, and more or less put back together, I ate some food. It was a bit off tonight. I found some Chicken in my supposedly vegetarian dish. MB took out the trash, and I took out the recycling. I gave Leo a little spin in the back-yard. Soon bed.

Early to the Dentist's
Tuesday: Up at 6 AM. Shower, down basement for morning practices. MB was just getting out of bed when I reemerged. Fed the cats. On my way by about 7:35.
Lots of traffic heading into Boston, but managed to arrive at the dentist's office by 8:05 (for an 8:15 appointment). Sat in the chair for a long time. They are always confused by the fact I don't want to watch TV. Eventually my dentist arrived. They found the casts for my teeth, and can just make new crowns. We had a long talk about contractors and home-repair. He said he could have had my recent furnace job done at one-tenth the price! Left a little after 9.
Stopped on the walk back to the car to pick up a bagel. Drove to the office, arriving around 9:45. A good day at the office, though a little sleepy. Achieved lift-off on my new code, fixing several bugs in the process. Walked out and picked up a few new CDs and a burrito. Updated the KKC website (overdue). Near the end of the day, had a long talk with B about what's coming down the pike. Lots! Fixed a quick bug for this release, before heading out the door at 6:45. Lovely weather out.
Arrived at KKC about 7:10. Another yoga class with "disembodied Wendy courtesy of audio tape." Still quite good. Right ankle bothering me a little. Afterwards, emptied water bowls, and helped Sn shut the place down. Darn quiet.
Back home, some emailing. Another update to the KKC site. MB returned from TWO BD classes. We walked out, and exactly 4 slices of pizza were waiting for us as Leone's. We made up a story about how all the ingredients that went into the pizza were waiting for this special day, for us to walk into the shop, and pick up those slices. We ate in the backyard, with blazing tikis. Clean up. A little guitar. MB's headed to bed. I'm going to stay up a little longer.

Tooth
Monday: Last night, noticed one of my front teeth is cracked. A strange sitting after MB returned home, drifting into sleep. Made it up later, but, anther late night, into another late morning. Called the plumber to arrange for her to drop off the basement key. Called the dentist. Brief morning practices, shower, packed a breakfast and then headed out.
Stopped at the library, wearing my newly expoxied sunglasses. Better to look through than at. OK for the car. Asked for a new copy of my library card. The man behind the counter was careful to correct me: I wanted my library card REPLACED. This is the difference between software people and the rest of the world. I see my library card as nothing more than a physical manifestation of my account number.
Over to KKC. Quite a lovely day out. Hit with a strong and complex odor coming from the town garbage truck. Unfortunately lingering. Filled water bowls (had to empty them first). Didn't feel like doing this today. Saw Ed working on a new sink in the kitchen. Funky plumbing in the old building. Brought garbage cans back around.
In to work. A fairly productive day. Actually began stepping through some code in my new project. Spotted a design flaw, that made me rethink a few things. Showed B some of my recent work. Quiet on the bug front. Headed home around 7:40.
Back home before MB. Down basement, and transplanted practices, until about 9:15. Upstairs and said hello. Her BD class went well today: 6 students. Called my mom. Long talk. Our dear friend K isn't doing so well, and it has mom in a funk. Many vivid illustrations of the transient nature of life lately. But we had a good talk, that left her spirits a little brightened, I think. Ate a veggie burger. Guitar for about 45 minutes. Throwing out some compositional ideas, and going back to the original inspiration. My father's piano teacher had some choice words on composition: "If you don't like it, don't use it!" Soon bed.

Mark's visit
Sunday: Slept in, after a pointless late night. Really should have gotten myself to go to bed earlier last night. MB headed off to OCBC. Up, and shower. Down basement for morning practices. MB returned, so, I cut these short, and spent time with her. I made us some eggs and soy sausage, then hanging out. A bit of guitar. She headed out to a BD gig (Ziaf, and another band at the Regent). Down basement, epoxied the frames of some sunglasses that recently cracked while riding around in my coat pocket. Completed morning practices. Found that it was almost time to leave for guitar circle. Changed clothes, and headed out.
To my surprise, Mark B was a guest in the circle tonight. Otherwise, it was just Victor, David and myself. Quiet, then some talk about the upcoming Soundscape shows, and what we might do to provide support. This got into some fairly deep waters. Then, Mark joined us in some circulation work, C Maj up and back, and then the same cascading C Maj exercise from last week. Surprisingly difficult. And some free circulation to end. This had quite a fine quality to it, that seemed directly a result of our prior work.
Back home, no sign of MB. Ate left-over Dragon Villa food, listening to NPR.

Gf's Ankle
Saturday: Slept in a bit. Lazy morning with MB. Breakfast (cereal, joking about the 'yogurt snot'). Some guitar. Shower. She headed out to run errands. Down basement for morning practices (although, it was 2 in the afternoon). Mta called with a question about her computer. MB came home while I was at it. I came to a stopping point and came up just in time to say goodbye to her again (she heading off to do a belly-gram.) Pretty day out, on the cool side, with puffy clouds. Some more yoga. Went out back and cut the grass. Changed a light-bulb in the bathroom. Mta and F showed up. I did what I could for some files she was trying to retrieve. MB came home, and disappeared for a while. I brought out chips, salsa and beans, and we all had a snack. MB showed us a video about AIDS in Africa. Horrifying and wrenchingly sad. What to do? With no answer, I did some clean-up. There was talk of seeing the Batman film. Mta and F left.
I tried to call my mom, but got answering machines. Called my old friend Gf, who recently had a nasty fall, and broke his ankle. He seemed in pretty good spirits, given the circumstances. We talked for about an hour, missing the Batman movie start in the process. Mom on call-waiting, to say we could talk tomorrow. Put away dishes. More guitar.
Down basement for the completion of morning practices, and a little work, looking at how to spool the microfilm. Back upstairs, and a bit more guitar. MB came down, and I scrambled a couple eggs. We watched some of an SNL rerun. Made the bed. She went to sleep before me, as she has an early day tomorrow. A note from Wnd, her father is doing better.

Escalator
Friday: Fitful sleep. Strange dream about a train, on the way to MFP, stopping at the Museum of Science, taking a high speed 'water park' escalator, up many floors, finding myself in a temple, wearing only underwear, deciding not to wear scarves, the Lama being wrapped head to toe, as LY was at his cremation. Up a bit after 9. Web. Shower. Down basement for morning practices. Took longer than I thought. A little guitar.
Stopped at the PO and mailed some cassette tapes back to Milarepa center. In to work, and fixed one small bug. Spent the rest of the day working on new project. That's going pretty well. Feeling a bit off today. Soreness in my upper back, and throat.
Around 8, I headed to Logan, and found Geshela, Wendy and Nick, just about to go through the gate. I said goodbye to all of them Geshela gave me some words of encouragement. Walked with the group back towards the exit. Hln and Hm helped me figure out the automated parking fee payment machine. I somehow had parked right next to Hln's car.
Took Rt 1A, to Rt 16 for my path home. Decided not to go out with MB, but stay in and coddle myself. (Sn, at the airport, had said that the symptoms I'm having were the same as his, before he got very ill last week.) No fever. MB came in, then went out again to meet Sty at the Independent. A little guitar. I made two burritos, and ate while I watched "The Wire." Clean-up, listening to "Mirror in the Bathroom." Wnd's dad is not doing well, but her washing machine was fixed.
Now, a little more guitar, then bed.
Forgot to mention, a couple of days ago, I saw a rather portly older gentleman in a mini-van, really grooving out, and singing along to the Paul Williams song "Just and Old Fashioned Love Song." For some reason, I found this quite disturbing.

Electrical Outlet
Thursday: Slept in, after a late night. Sat at the computer in a fog for a while. Shower. Morning practices. Installed an electrical outlet next to the furnace to tidy up some plugs. Cleaned up some guitar straps and other stuff that were hiding behind my amp upstairs. Headed to work.
In late. Cast around for bugs to whack, but didn't find much. Switched back to my other project (new stuff). Feeling lethargic today. Talked to B about the dangers of having one person be the only expert on a big complicated subsystem. Headed home around 8:30 PM.
Stopped at the vid store. Walked up the street. Wanted to order a medium pizza, but they didn't have any mediums. Took this as a compounding factor, along with the overall vibe of the shop, to take my business elsewhere. Walked across the street and ordered some food from The Dragon Villa. Picked up The Wire from the video store, then drove to pick up my food. It started to rain. Lightening also.
Back home, food and entertainment. MB returned about mid-way into the episode. Some talk about finances. Guitar.

Ghost Story
Wednesday: Up around 8. Restless sleep last night, on top of being up late. MB off. Shower. Brief morning practices. Headed off to my lesson with Jun.
Hit traffic, so took a different route, circling around on the Mass Pike, then Storrow. Still arrived with about 5 minutes to spare. A good session, lots more music theory, and then some improvisation work. Looking at Bartok's extensions to Classical harmonic structure. Then, he surprised me by playing a fragment of "Larks Tongues in Aspic" on the piano. The power of minor thirds!
They only had one slice of pizza at my usual place, so walked down the street and found another pizza shop for slice number two. Headed in to work. A brief day. A few small graphical fixes. Talked with B about the Intel shift and XCode. Headed out a little after 6:30.
Arrived at KKC a little late. This was the last class before Geshela returns to India. Two more sections of the 70 Topics. I asked a question, but I don't think it made it through translation. A short class, running into Tara. I left at 9:05 while things were still going on, hoping to avoid long goodbyes.
Stopped at the Home Depot, and picked up an electrical plug and a switch cover. Back home, MB was hanging out with several people from OCBC. I sat with them, listening to conversation and eating some bean soup. One of the people present was a refugee from Africa. He said that in his country, what we think of as coasters for putting under glasses, they put on top of the glass to keep out flies. He began telling a ghost story. One of the people present suddenly became quite ill and had to go outside for some air. The party broke up. MB offered to drive the ill person home. I began cleaning the kitchen, goodbyes, then more cleaning. When MB returned, she took over cleaning, and I headed down basement. Transplanted morning practices. Soon bed.

Cat with Can on Tail
Tuesday: Up around 7:30. The plumber called, saying she wouldn't make the meeting we'd set up. I let her know about my dissatisfactions, in as nice a way as I could. She was pretty accommodating. MB headed off to work. Shower. Wrote MB a detailed response to a proposal she'd had. Down basement for morning practices. Packed a breakfast. Headed out.
Began noticing a funny clunk whenever I accelerated or put on the brakes. Thoughts spun to things that could be wrong with my car. Found parking in Porter. Picked up strings from the music shop. Talked about guitar care products, and things to reduce finger-neck adhesion.
In to work, another day of fixing little bugs. Spent time testing something for a third party developer. No great shakes. Wound up fixing a couple of small things. Left around 6:35. Cooler today than I expected.
KKC and yoga. Very good as always. Some reflection on the horror of individuality. After class, we all hung around a bit. Hln came out of the KKC guest room and said hello. Wnd and I drove into Medford center and each had a bowl of soup. On my way home, realized that the clunk I'd been hearing while driving was something rolling around in my trunk.
Back home, heard about MB's belly-gram at the Masonic Temple. We talked about the size and shape of our respective craniums. Guitar. Did some searching for sheet music in the online library catalog. Soon bed.

Gertrude's Olives
Monday: Woke as MB headed out, but, opted to sleep in. A brief sitting, then some more sleep. Up around 10:30. Shower, packed a breakfast, then over to KKC.
Said hello to Geshela. Apologized for being late. Filled water bowls. Said hello to Hln. Headed to work. Another hot one today.
B was back from WWDC. Small bug fixing. Some talk about future directions after we ship with Alx. Reading XCode documentation. Worked on a small behavior change for D.R... but it probably won't go in this release. While things were building, I updated the KKC and OCBC websites. He Beat-It. Said hello to our new web person. Headed home around 9.
Back home, bread and cheese with MB. Talking about my dear departed godmother. Some talk about finances. Guitar for an hour or so. Working on composition, mostly. Got cleaned up and ready for bed. Now, in the basement, and about to complete morning practices. Hopefully I'll get to bed before 4.

Nap
Sunday: Woke around 8. Brief sitting and shower. MB made some breakfast (eggs and bagels). No sign of And. Feeling sleepy. Measured the holes in the hinges on the basement door. Headed to KKC at about 9:55.
Arrived a little late. Wnd was running the tape rig. Sleepy. Stabbed foot with pen to stay awake. Asked a question about the 'named self' and the 'self of person.' (not the same, was the answer). Discussion about the magician and elephant example. After class took a short walk with Wnd around the block. Very hot out. She had to go help a friend of her's shop for a bridal gown. A nice talk with MiCn, who was repairing an ornament on the KKC sign.
Stopped at the Home Depot on the way home, and bought screws. Back at ranch, I had a glass of iced tea, and talked to And a bit. Then, I got to work on the basement door. The screws holding the hinges onto the door-jam were all stripped, and there was little wood there to grab into. I eventually just drilled new holes for screws through the hinges, after chiseling out behind. While I was working, And came out packed up and heading out. I completed my work on the door, it being more secure, and closing more easily. MB returned while I was showering.
We had lunch (I had a veggie burger), then went to sit on the couch. We realized we were both quite sleep deprived. A two and a half hour nap ensued. There goes the afternoon!
We woke around 7:15. I did some transplanted morning practices in the basement, and then, it was time for Guitar Circle.
A skeleton crew in the Dojo tonight, just MB, myself, Victor and Martin. We did some circulation work, and played Eye of the Needle a couple times. R&R section of Thrak. Talk. Low energy.
Back home, I completed my practices in the basement, then posted the KKC calendar (which takes quite a while...). Somehow, it was after 4 AM.

Bridge is 4
Saturday: Up a little after 7. Shower. Abbreviated morning practices in the basement music-room, it smelling of solder and grease from the recent plumbing. A bowl of cereal with MB, then off to Victor's.
A hot overcast day. Lots of traffic due to construction, but luckily not on the route we were taking. "Living in the Past." We arrived at Victor's around 10:15. I helped carry speakers and whatnot up to the backyard. Enjoyable conversation with Jm, who was also helping. Arriving kids. Jn gave me some perfumed talc for my hands. Soon, it was time to play. Several Beatles tunes. A splendid time was seemingly had by all. Terry and friend were present. The pizza arrived just as our set ended. Some food, then more carrying. MB and I said goodbye and left around 1 PM. A hot and sunny drive home.
A shower, and a change of clothes on arriving back home. And was up and about. I stuffed CD sleeves for LYWA DVDs as MB worked on musical selections for BD. She and And finally got a chance to connect on dance. After a couple of calls to tech support, I finally found a solution to the outgoing email problems I've been having. Uploaded retreat MP3s to Rb's site. Recorded a version of one of my latest compositions, encoded it, and sent it to Shawn. Did clean-up work in the basement, airing the place out, vacuuming, mopping, moving furniture back, scrubbing out the tub. MB made some sandwiches, which we ate. MB headed off to Winthrop about 8:30. And and I followed about a half hour later. Good talking with her on the drive.
We watched MB dance in the newly renovated Kasbah. Some little foods, and more conversation. We left at about 10:30.
Back home, gave And a brief tour of the basement. Transplanted morning practices. Sleepy. MB returned a little after 1 AM.

hot water
Friday. Slept in a bit after a late night. Up around 9:30, MB already gone. Walked down the street and retrieved something from my car. Drove it back around to the house. Sponge bath (this is getting old), then brief morning practices. Packed the car, found And was already gone. On the road to Victor's about 10:40.
I was concerned about being late, and I was (about 7 minutes), but I was also the first one there, other than Victor. An interesting rehearsal of several Beatles tunes. Jm is quite an amazing musician. Our performance tomorrow will not be polished, but as Victor said "It will be good enough for 4 year olds."... And probably fairly enjoyable for anyone, actually. Jn took off about 1:30. Jm, Victor and I worked a little more on vocals.
In to work. Fixed a minor bug in time for the build we are releasing for testing over the weekend. I think we're pretty close. Some socializing. Around 6:30 Al and I walked over to the open-air bar near the Charles hotel, meeting up with Fi and Dnl. Nd showed up later. Enjoyable conversation. I headed out around 7:40.
Stopped at the grocers, and picked up a few things for grilling. Back home, and HOT WATER! I lit some briquettes in the fire pit, then check to see if the household heating aspect was working as well. It was, after I bled the air out of the lines. MB and I had a little veggie barbecue out back, a sliver of a moon in the west. Clean up. Hot shower. Played a little piano, looking at some of the concepts Jun and I had been talking about. Perhaps some guitar.
Thursdays are music day
Thursday: Up around 8. MB headed out. Sponge bath and so on (still no hot water). Morning practices in the bedroom. Gave And a cup and a washcloth. Packed my stuff into the car. Talked to the plumbers. They said that an external air intake was not necessary, and assured me that the job would be done by the end of the day.
Drove over to Jun's. A good session, reviewing some stuff. I played a composition for him a couple of times. We worked on improvisation. Difficult trying to play with him... I'm so out of my league. That's a good thing. Afterwards, pizza, as per usual.
In to work. Talked with J about the Intel switch. Fixed a crash bug that I had run into last night. Saw B in the keynote audience. Lunch at my desk. Left around 7:45.
Productive session with Shawn. I downloaded the rest of my new composition to him, and we managed to make it through a couple of times. Afterwards I said "It's strange to share something so complicated that I've invented with someone else. It's a little like 'now its your problem too!'" He told me an old band-mate of ours will be in town.
Back home, unloaded the car, then found a parking spot. Still no hot water. Strange, because it looks like the work was almost done, and there wasn't any note saying what happened. MB went off to bed. I ate a faux-chicken sandwich, then worked on Beatles songs for an hour or so. And came in from visiting a friend as I sat down to answer emails.

And
Wednesday: Slept in this morning, after a late night. MB headed out to have her car's oil changed, I woke up when she got back. Sponge bath (no hot water), brief sitting. Said hello to the plumbers and asked them about some parts that were supposed to be replaced. Breakfast, guitar. MB headed out around noon. Morning practices in the dance room. Said goodbye to the plumbers. Warm, slightly hazy day.
In to work. Checked in a couple of fixes, and fixed a long standing bug that had been quite difficult to track down. Funnily enough, there was a comment saying that no one should do the exact thing that was being done. Another indication that its often best to make the code as self documenting and self guarding as possible. Walked out and got a burrito. Ate at my desk, and did a couple of KKC related things. Walked out and met And sitting at Au Bon Pain. We walked back to the office parking lot, then drove to KKC. Lots of traffic in H Square, it being close to graduation. Good conversation.
70 Topics. The material was so dense for the first 15 minutes or so, I couldn't even figure out what to write in my notes. Then, I think Geshe Tsulga took pity on us, and slowed things down a little. And knew several people and looked like she was enjoying the socializing afterwards. Rain.
Back home, got And settled in the dance room. MB took a bath with water heated on the stove. I looked around in the basement at what is left to be done on the heating system. Some snacks standing around in the kitchen. Guitar.

Beatles
Tuesday: Woke around 7, MB getting up. Out of bed a bit after 8. Shower, then morning practice in the dance room. Breakfast. Worked on music for an hour or so, working on improvisation to a piece suggested by Jun. Headed to work, the plumbers still not in evidence.
Cloudy and warm out. Worked on a couple bugs today. Consulting with Dv and Dn. Took a walk out to the CVS, and the barber. Picked up some pizza, which I ate at my desk. Left around 6:35.
KKC and yoga. Good session. A bit warmer than previous classes. Helped empty water bowls. Headed out soon after, saying a quick goodbye to Wnd and Wendy.
Back home, the plumbers had gotten some work done, but there's a lot more to do. Called And to see about her plans. Hung out with MB a little. Put new strings on the OST electric and gave it a cleaning. Transferred audio to the computer, and then, began work on the 6 Beatles tunes for Bridge's party. We had no running hot water, but MB boiled some on the stove, and we took bathes. More music. Realized I had left something at work, so drove in. While I was there I got sucked into watching the Steve Jobs keynote. My reality having been sufficiently distorted, I headed home... about 2:45 AM.

Boiler/Intel
Monday: Up around 7 in anticipation of the plumbers arriving. MB took a shower, and I dozed a bit more. She off to work. Shower, brief sitting. Cleared the way for the boiler delivery in the basement. Tea. Guitar. The boiler arrived, but still no sign of the plumbers. The driver wouldn't leave the paperwork with me, since they keep the prices of these things secret from the consumer. Some morning practices sitting on the sofa. Eventually I put a note on the front door saying they should just let themselves into the basement, and went upstairs to complete my morning practice. Then some more guitar. I heard them drain all the water out of the heating pipes while I was playing. Pulled my stuff together, and then out the door, saying hello to the fellow downstairs.
To KKC, and filled water bowls. Said hello to Hln. She offered me dhal and rice, but I declined. Sweeping.
Overcast, and cooler than yesterday. Quiet day in the office. I fixed bugs, and obsessively hit 'reload' on my web-page displaying the simul-blog of the Steve Jobs keynote. And, indeed the rumors were true: Apple is switching to Intel. Couldn't reproduce some of the bugs assigned to me. Talked with Mthw for a bit about Apple, and the second child for him and his wife, due to be born in a few months. Headed home around 9:30.
Took a look in the basement. They hadn't gotten much done. The old boiler was out, and the new one set in place, but that's about it. Victor was upstairs talking to MB in the living room. We went over some music for Bridge's birthday, which is this Saturday. After he left, some food, and then guitar. An old composition, which I had left unfinished, has taken form.

Summerish
Up around 9. MB had gotten up a little earlier to have breakfast with our house guest (who is giving the sermon at OCBC today). Shower. Very brief sitting of sorts. Downstairs to say hello to the house guest. She and MB left. I ate a muffin on the way to KKC.
A confusing class today. I think something was being lost in translation. We're working with material where clarity in language is essential, but it's difficult to achieve going through an interpreter, I think. (Not blaming Damchoe... he does a great job.) I asked a question at the end, that was perhaps a bit disrespectful. That feeling haunted me for the rest of the day. Helped Tsun-ma-la move some furniture around. She's giving up half her living space to make a guest-room.
Drove back to the ranch, Wnd following. I left off my car, and we drove in her's to Union. Lunch at the little Mexican place, talking about the same 70 Topics material as with Haim on the ride back from Milarepa. Took a walk up the hill to the castle, and back down.
Back home, caulked the front of the house, where there were cracks in the shingles remaining from when the house was insulated. Got up on top of the little roof over the bay window. Very hot, even though I'd put down a towel to protect myself. Vertigo. I managed to do what needed to be done, but it was a bit scary. This was a strange coincidence, because Wnd and I had just been talking about Vertigo. Inside and made some lemon-aid. Turned on the AC for the first time this year. MB returned from church/brunch/dance performance. Mowed the lawn. Sat for a spell in the backyard, enjoying the lovely hot weather, and the sounds of neighboring parties (Bootsy Collins booming over from the north-west). Hanging out with MB. Put away laundry. Down basement for transplanted morning practices.
MB and I made a little dinner together. She made a salad (romaine, hearts of palm, artichoke, feta) and I made one of my egg-drop soups. Afterwards, ice-cream. Some guitar.

The Western Loop
Saturday: Up at 7:05. Decided to go on my Western MA excursion today, rather then spend a lazy day at home. Shower. Down basement for a sitting. A cup of tea and some direction look-up on the web. Headed out about 8:55.
Lovely drive out route 2. Weather perfect. Decided too much wind nose to listen to tapes. Found my way to Leveritt. Saw Hln and Geshela on the road. We couldn't find the turn, then got separated. I got to the Peace Pagoda just before them. We walked up the hill and set down our food. A walk around the pagoda. Others arrived and we helped carry some other stuff up the hill. Some words over the worms, around the pagoda, and then, into the ground with them. Then, a very nice picnic. Getting to know some 'friends of KKC' from Western MA. Headed off around 1 PM.
Using the directions on my laptop, I drove over to Wendell and to Mrg's house. Spent a couple of hours socializing. In the hammocks on the screen porch, walking past the blueberry field, scything in the backyard, dogs, Thor, Superman, flying rechargeable saucer. Heard some sad news about my old friend Gf (broke his leg, in a pretty gruesome fashion.) Past a certain point, it seemed they needed their space. I had dropped in more or less uninvited. Headed out around 4:30.
Found my way over the Petersham and BB's house. Today was his birthday celebration. Didn't know many people at the party, but had enjoyable conversation nonetheless. Victor had left out an all important En-Apostrophe-Tee, in the phrase "There are enough of coming us for any sort of performance." This caused me a bit of confusion. Lots of good food. Tiki torches. "Work." Found that Cyn took many calls for someone, while she was covering for them on 'toilette cleaning duty' (more pressing presidential work occupying his time). Many bugs. Victor arrived around 8. I left around 9:20.
Uneventful drive home, stopping once for an energy drink. Arrived back around 11. We have a house-guest (she's giving a sermon tomorrow at OCBC). Hanging out with MB. She made $75 from doing a belly-gram today. She cleaned out the basement, displacing many bugs. We talk about Thrak a little. Shower. Guitar, working on an old-new-composition. Now, transplanted morning practices, then bed.

No boiler
Friday: Up around 7:30. Shower. MB headed to work. Brief sitting. Paid bills downstairs. The plumbers were supposed to arrive to accept delivery of the new boiler at 8:30. At 9 I called them. The truck carrying the boiler had broken down, and so delivery had been rescheduled for Monday. Breakfast. Down basement for morning practices. Headed to work.
Lovely day out. Stopped at a convenience store for sun glasses and an energy drink. At work, did some more on the longer term project, and fixed a couple of bugs. Talked to B and Mrk about infinities and Cantorization. Strangely we had all been thinking about infinity recently.
Headed home a little after 8. Ordered a pizza. Rented some DVDs. A typical "Glenn's party night". Ate and watched an episode of "The Wire." MB came home about half way in. We watched the rest of that, and then the latest Margaret Cho movie. A funny coincidence involving involuntary moving violations.

Jun3
Thursday: Up around 8:30 as MB headed out. Web. Shower. Long sitting. Feeling headachy today. Some other morning practices downstairs. Ran out of time. Headed out to my music lesson. Lovely weather today.
Interesting lesson today. Looking at various forms of parallel motion and harmonic shift, at the intersection of early 20th century classical music, and jazz. Some pizza and an energy drink.
In to work. More bug fixing. Talked to Mtw about the new design a bit. Not sure how productive that was. Took a walk out and did some banking. Wanted to find some sunglasses, but no luck. Checked some stuff in at the end of the day. More or less at the end of my bug list for now, I turned my attention to the other project I'm working on... a bit halfheartedly, it beign the end of the day. Left around 8.
Stopped on the way home to do some grocery shopping. MB left a message on my cell saying she was at a BD rehearsal. Back home. Put away groceries. Fed the cats. Took out garbage and recycling. Moved some stuff down basement. Rolled up tent. Transplanted morning practices. Headache finally departed. MB returned home. Had a talk about finances.

Buyer's Remorse
Wednesday: Up at 7 AM, the phone ringing. Didn't catch it, but it was the plumber, saying the furnace and hot water tank would be delivered on Friday. Back to bed for a little while, then up around 8. A call from the other plumbers, saying they would be here to install the dishwasher between 10 and 2. I'm not sure why they even bothered to give me a time frame. MB headed to work. Brief sitting. Siphoned standing water out of the old dishwasher.
Shower. Morning practices, sitting in the living room. A lazy morning and early afternoon. Guitar. Email. Contacted the guys about microfilm. They had no idea what I was talking about. Did some KKC web work. At 2:25 I called the plumbers saying I was thinking of canceling the job. They showed up around 3. Two young guys. I really should have done the job myself. No... I really should have just repaired the old one. The whole thing had the sense of it being hugely and unnecessarily expensive. The guys were in a hurry, and not particularly careful with what they were doing. They were stumped by the fact that the hole wasn't quite square. They installed the machine sticking too far out into the room. They wouldn't take the cardboard box for the new unit, and they left a mess behind. By this point it was 4 PM.
In to work for a token couple of hours. A lovely day out. Enjoyable drive. Determined what was causing bugs in a particular plug-in, that really needs to work well. Fixed another bug. Talked to Mtw a bit about the new design. headed out at 6:30.
KKC. Arrived on time. Ey was there for the first time since his mom passed away. Another download on 70 Topics. I asked a question at the end, with an answer that I wasn't expecting. (Infinity is an odd concept... For example, suppose that there are an infinite number of points on a line... that doesn't mean that all the spots on the line are filled in. There could still be gaps.) Then, a cookie fest. Tni gave me some microfilm. Gave checks to Wendy.
Back home, feeling a bit depressed about how the dishwasher turned out. MB was playing guitar. Crushed the cardboard box, and readied it for recycling. Vacuumed. Decided I couldn't take the way the dishwasher was installed. In 10 minutes, had it in a much better orientation, given the constraints of the opening. Found that they baseboard had also been installed incorrectly, so fixed that. Gave the front a clean. Eventually I was satisfied. A frozen burrito and veggies, with some instant mashed. Talking to MB about tolerance for different beliefs between religions. Sorted through mail. Talked about the vastness of the universe, spurred by quite a good article.
But consider that if the sun were a grain of salt, the Milky Way Galaxy with its estimated 200,000 million stars would represent a 70-ton pile of salt with each grain being over 7 miles apart. Since the universe contains some 100,000 million such galaxies, its enormousness is overwhelming to the imagination.
Goodnight Moon.
